Because this lesson falls in the middle of the overall unit, this pre-learning activity utilizes the QUIZIZZ presentation mode to access prior knowledge regarding clauses and phrases while introducing the sentence types. The practice questions are low stakes and gives students the ability to track their understanding of the new information

This Jeopardy style game (created using Jeopardy Labs) is meant to be delivered in class as a competitive group activity. After dividing groups and completing pre-activity tasks, students will participate in a live trivia game. This form of gamification utilizes competitive play, choice through category selections, team roles, group collaboration, and point tracking.
|
1) Teacher will divide students into groups of 2-4 students per group.
2) Students will divide pre-activity tasks within their group (simple, cx, cd, cd-cx) *some students will have more than one role 3) Each student will write the definition of their assigned sentence type and an example sentence on a piece of cardstock. These can be referenced or used during game play. 4) Students will determine game play roles (buzzer, category chooser, speaker, and researcher) 5) When the game begins, students will use one device to buzz using buzzin.live and will have time to confer with their team before buzzing. The teacher will keep score using the jeopardy board system. |
After students complete the group activity, the game-based tool Gimkit will be used as a warm-up in the following class. Students love the different options in the live play version (view my Gimkit Tutorial here) and this will reinforce the skill while tracking individual rather than group student understanding. This tool can also be used as supplemental practice when students are provided with an "assignment link" to complete the activity in their own time.
