An instructional designer creates subject samplers in order to provide curated resources for learning online. Students walk through learning by exploring and engaging with instructional activities. This allows students to learn new information, apply their learning, and assess for understanding with clear resources and instructions provided. Subject samplers typically use curated mini-lessons, videos, and activities to guide students through learning new content. Each subject sampler includes a variety of different activities to progressively build student knowledge as they walk through the lesson. Many designers gather pre-created resources and combine them in a scaffolded way to provide a clear path for student learning.
For my subject sampler, I decided to use Nearpod as the delivery platform. While I could have provided the activities on a webpage for students to access, I wanted to provide them through Nearpod because with this program, all of the learning resources are housed in one location, and all of the student responses and interactions with the activities are collected for the teacher to view. This holds the learner accountable and provides the teacher with a one-stop location to assess how the students performed and what further follow-up or adjustments might be needed moving forward with the concept. Nearpod also has many built in features and functions to support interactivity rather than passive learning.
This subject sampler combines videos, interactive activities, collaboration, websites, virtual field trips and much more so that students can explore and understand the impact and use of text features in Non-Fiction texts.
